Critical – Creative Thinking / Final Grading Period

Monday we begin the final grading period for this school year. Look ahead at what we will be covering on Monday, and review the weekly lesson plans for next week.

Develop – formulate * generate * elaborate

Class Notes may be taken digitally or hand written, using the Cornell system or any other system you prefer. Class notes will be collected at the end of the unit for both completion and accuracy.  All class lectures as well as discussions and vocabulary builder words must be included in your notes. The purpose of taking class note, regardless of the form you take them in, is to develop or improve the quality or substance of your understanding of the material or lesson being taught in class.  Your notes should help you extend or elaborate upon the idea or material taught in order to give it greater significance, meaning, understanding, complexity or strength to the material.

Note of Clarification

Directly From the Eng. 10 Class Syllabus

Attendance/Absences/Makeup Work: Your presence (mind and body) in class is essential. If you must miss class due to illness or other circumstances beyond your control, it is your responsibility to find out which assignments you missed, to acquire the handouts, and to borrow and copy the class notes for the day(s) you were absent. Because you will have at least a week’s lead-time for papers and other major assignments, the due date remains the same regardless of your absence. If you are ill the day a paper is due, submit it online, or deliver it to a friend who can turn it in for you. If an emergency arises (illness or otherwise) and you absolutely cannot  complete an assignment, I will need a note from your parent/guardian explaining the situation.

We had a situation this week where about seven students missed the movie day.  I am not making any judgements on the various reasons that students had to miss a day that they knew well in advance was the day we were viewing the movie, life happens. However, missing the day the movie was shown in class is not an acceptable reason not to be on task with the compare and contrast writing assignment that we have been working on for the last two weeks.  All the dates have been posted well in advance and when something comes up that throw your plans off track, successful people figure out a way to adjust the plan.  I am very proud of the four students who missed the movie who came into class and asked if they could watch the movie on NetFlix or at home on DVD. One student borrowed the DVD we had used at school. The point being, the due date for the essay is Friday, tomorrow. If something happened and you have to do a little more problem solving to make that happen, that is just a part of what mature and successful people do.  Back to those pesky Habits of Mind we studied at the first of the year.

Review the front board in class for tips on how to help your writing partner with the peer review process today, and remember that final drafts are due by the end of class tomorrow.
