Thanks to a Penguin – Random House Teacher Awards for Literacy runner-up award, a new book club (strictly for pleasure) has been started at Wapahani High School in Selma, IN. Membership is open to any 9th – 12th grade student, teachers, and staff. We meet every other Tuesday for our “Read & Feed” inspired book chats. Books are selected by members, purchased through book club funds and given to each member to read and add to their personal library. During our first year books we read included: Will Grayson Will Grayson, The Kill Order, The Hollow, A School for Unusual Girls, Shallow Graves, Undertow, Walk on Earth a Stranger ,,,. We also had our first Blind Date with a Book.
To fund the WHS Book Club and support our universal mission to encourage kids to read every day so they can lead better lives we held our first District Wide Literary Festival and Book Fair in Jan. of 2016. High School Book Club members read to younger groups of children and served as personal shopping assistants to help families pick out just the right books. Our next Book Fair is scheduled for Sept. 26 – 30, 2016.
We also have a Goodreads Group
We can use this Goodreads group to stay in touch over the summer and suggest new books to consider for next year’s reading list.
